Why Do Horse Stables Need Ventilation?

Horse stables need a constant supply of fresh air. Good ventilation allows heat, moisture, dust and stale air to leave the building.

Without enough airflow, dust, mould and ammonia from urine can build up and affect your horse’s breathing. The risk increases when horses spend long periods inside.

Stable Ventilation at a Glance

To improve airflow and air quality:

  • Keep suitable doors, windows and vents open
  • Provide more than one route for air to enter and leave
  • Include enough roof and eaves height
  • Use roof vents, gable vents or open trusses where appropriate
  • Add rear doors or windows to create cross-ventilation
  • Use talk grilles to improve airflow between neighbouring boxes
  • Remove wet bedding and droppings regularly
  • Choose clean, low-dust bedding and forage
  • Keep hay and bedding away from occupied boxes
  • Maintain suitable drainage
  • Give horses as much turnout as their health and routine allow.

How Do You Ventilate a Stable?

Stable Doors and Windows

Open top stable doors and windows let fresh air into each box. Openings on different walls help air move through the stable and allow warm, stale air to escape.

Use safe window materials and fit secure mesh or bars between the horse and the opening. Position windows where they provide fresh air and natural light without putting the horse at risk.

In an American barn, top doors at the rear of each box can work with the main barn doors and high-level vents to keep fresh air moving through the building. They also give horses an outside view and can be closed during bad weather.

Stables still need ventilation during winter. Closing every door and window can trap moisture, dust and ammonia inside.

Roof Height, Trusses and Vents

Warm, damp air rises. Roof vents, gable vents and open trusses give it a way to leave the stable block or American barn.

The British Horse Society recommends leaving 60-90cm (2-3ft) between the horse’s ears and the eaves when it stands normally. This gives the horse enough headroom and helps air circulate.

Talk Grilles

What Are the Signs of Poor Stable Ventilation?

Signs of poor stable ventilation can include:

  • A strong ammonia or stale smell
  • Condensation on windows or roofing
  • Damp walls, bedding or timber
  • Visible dust on surfaces
  • Mould or mildew on walls, forage or bedding
  • Air that feels hot or stuffy.

These problems are usually easier to notice in the morning after the stable has been closed overnight.

Poor air quality can cause coughing, nasal discharge, breathing problems or poor performance. These signs can have other causes, so contact your vet for advice.

How Does Stable Management Affect Air Quality?

Good ventilation also depends on how you manage the stable. Daily tasks can help reduce dust, damp and ammonia inside the box.

To support better air quality:

  • Remove wet bedding promptly
  • Choose clean, absorbent and low-dust bedding
  • Check hay and forage for dust or mould
  • Store forage and bedding away from occupied stables
  • Keep floors and drainage channels clear
  • Remove horses while mucking out where possible
  • Allow dust to settle before bringing them back inside
  • Groom in an open, airy area where possible
  • Clean windows, grilles and vents so they do not become blocked
  • Increase turnout where possible.
